A notable number of American citizens dissatisfied with Donald Trump’s recent election victory are considering relocation to Europe through Golden Visa programs, with Greece emerging as one of the preferred destinations.

According to a CNN report, interest among more affluent American citizens in EU Golden Visa programs has surged following the US presidential election. These programs allow foreign nationals to obtain residence permits and citizenship in exchange for investments such as purchasing property, acquiring state bonds, or launching new businesses.

Portugal has emerged as the top choice for Americans seeking to move as this EU country’s minimum Golden Visa spending requirement is set at 250,000 euros and leads to citizenship after five years.

The citizenship waiting period ranges between seven and 10 years in other EU countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain. Even so, all three Mediterranean destinations remain popular choices for Americans looking to leave their homeland.

The cost of Greece’s Golden Visa program has been significantly increased since September 1.

Malta and Austria are the top choices for Americans, as their golden visa programs provide immediate citizenship, though at a significantly higher cost.

Sector firm Henley & Partners has reported that its website hits by Americans have nearly quadrupled since just prior to the US election.

But many of these people do not intend to move abroad permanently. “Most Americans are just focused on having the choice,” said Dominic Volek, head of private clients at Henley & Partners.

Arton Capital, an investment advisory firm specializing in helping individuals relocate abroad, reported a fivefold increase in inquiries from potential movers the day after Trump’s victory.
